LAS VEGAS - Governor Lombardo today officially announced Protect Girls’ Sports, a Nevada initiative petition to safeguard the integrity and fairness of female athletics, and will serve as its Honorary Chair.
Protect Girls’ Sports proposes to amend Nevada’s Constitution to protect female athletes and level the playing field in girls’ sports. Governor Lombardo is leading the effort alongside a broad and growing coalition of Nevadans, including elected officials, advocates, and community leaders, who believe in the integrity of women’s athletics. A formal steering committee will be announced in the coming weeks.
“We are taking thoughtful steps to ensure girls’ sports are fair and athletes are safe,” said Governor Joe Lombardo. “It’s important that female athletes have the opportunity to succeed in their athletic field. By bringing together a diverse coalition now, we can establish clear and fair standards that protect generations of female athletes to come.”
Please see statements from the directors of the initiative petition Adriana Guzmán Fralick, Heidi Kasama, and Erica Neely:
"Title IX was instituted for a reason – to create a level playing field so that girls and boys have an equal chance to succeed in our schools. But there has been an attack on girls’ athletics that seeks to disrupt that equality. The people of Nevada do not support this, and I’m proud to help them make their voice heard on this issue at the ballot box." - Adriana Guzmán Fralick
"Protecting girls’ sports is paramount to preserving opportunities for girls across our state. We’re taking a stand against this attack on common sense and inviting every voter to join us to show that Nevadans will protect and defend the rights of young women and girls." - Heidi Kasama
"As a mother of daughters, this matters to me personally. I want my girls to grow up in a world where they’re treated equally and have a fair chance, especially in sports. This proposed amendment protects equal rights for everyone, while making sure girls’ teams stay just for girls, so our daughters can compete safely and fairly. There are still co-ed options. For me, this isn’t political, it’s about protecting opportunities for our daughters.” - Erica Neely
Background on the Protect Girls' Sports initiative:
The Protect Girls’ Sports initiative is a proposed amendment to the Nevada Constitution, being filed this week, that would amend the Equal Rights Amendment to protect fairness and integrity in girls’ athletics.
Once legal review and procedural requirements are complete, signature gathering will begin statewide. As required under Nevada law, the measure would appear on the ballot in 2026 and again in 2028, and upon passage would become part of the Nevada Constitution.
The Governor is assembling a leadership team to spearhead the initiative and will continue expanding the coalition in the weeks and months ahead, ensuring voices from across Nevada are represented.
More details, including steering committee members and opportunities to support the effort, will be announced soon.
